Loss to Mines extends UCCS losing streak to four matches

GOLDEN- Elizabeth Serra-Hsu led four Orediggers in double-figure kills as the Colorado School of Mines defeated the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 3-1 (25-18, 25-13, 22-25, 25-10) Friday evening at Lockridge Arena.

Serra-Hsu (16), Kaity Edmiston (14), Amanda Massey (13) and Amanda Paradisa (10) all reached double digits for the Orediggers (8-6, 3-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). As a team, Mines had 61 kills compared to the Mountain Lions'28 and outhit UCCS .325 to .071.

It was the fourth straight loss for UCCS (6-8, 1-4 RMAC) and ended the Mountain Lions' four-match winning streak against the Orediggers.

Karina Miastkowska led the Mountain Lions with seven kills and assisted on five of their seven blocks. Lauren Orth added six kills, while Sonja Johnson and Kim Boogaard each had five.

Serra-Hsu also led Mines with 18 digs and had seven of her team's eight service aces. Massey added 18 assists to her kill number.

Three consecutive service errors by UCCS helped Mines open a 15-10 lead in the first set. The Mountain Lions closed the deficit to three, but kills by Massey and Paradisa plus an assisted block by Serra-Hsu and Edmiston helped give Mines a 23-16 lead. Two kills by Serra-Hsu closed out the set.

The win ended UCCS'streak of 12 consecutive sets won against the Orediggers.

Mines opened the second set wit a 6-1 run. UCCS closed to 9-6, but Mines answered with a 12-3 run to take command. The Mountain Lions managed only six kills in the set, three by Boogaard.

The Orediggers came out quickly again in the third set, scoring the first four points, but UCCS came back to tie it at nine. It was still tied at 21 when a Mines Service error was followed by a Johnson kill and a service ace by reserve Courtney Carrell to put UCCS up 24-21. A Serra-Hsu kill was answered by Miastkowska as the Mountain Lions closed the match to 2-1.

Set No. 4 was never close. Three kills by Massey and two Serra-Hsu aces opened a 9-1 lead. While UCCS never got closer than six, the Orediggers made it a rout by closing with a 7-1 run.

The Mountain Lions will make the drive to Chadron, Neb., Friday night and will play the Eagles on Saturday.
