COLORADO SPRINGS - Isak Tengesdal and Jaron Stewart each scored their first goal of the season but the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs was beaten 4-2 by the Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.

The problems started early for the Mountain Lions with a foul just outside the penalty area. CSU-Pueblo's Trevor Martinet was able to free kick the ball into the right corner of the net 19:18 into the first half.

"We give someone five yards of space 20 yards from our goal, of course they're going to have a good chance on the net," said UCCS coach Henry Ellis. "You give someone that much space when they're that close to the dangerous area, that's always going to be trouble for you."

UCCS would come back to tie it four minutes later with a pass from Donny Stone to Tengesdal, who was able to shoot it into the right corner of the net.

That comeback would be short-lived. One minute, 24 seconds later, with Mountain Lion goalie Adam Liszewski out of the goal, the Thunderwolves' Robert Kinsey kicked it over his head after a pass by Dylan Cook.

With less than four minutes to go in the first half, UCCS defender Stewart drove up the center of the field and scored from 25 yards out to tie the game 2-2.

Six minutes into the second half, CSU-Pueblo's Udobong Obotette passed to David Fresquez whose shot deflected off of Liszewski's hands, off the cross bar and then back into the net to make it 3-2.

The Thunderwolves sealed the win 38 seconds later with a kick into the upper right corner of the net by Cook.

With less than 11 minutes remaining in the game UCCS had to play a man down when Matt Friesen got called with a red card.

"I said it from the start when we play as a team and we work hard it's definitely tough to beat us," said Ellis, "but when we come out and don't play, nothings going to happen for us and today was that day."

The Mountain Lions dropped to 2-5-1, 0-3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. With the win CSU-Pueblo climbed to 4-4, 2-2 RMAC.

Chris Smith (4-4) would earn the win for the Thunderwolves with five saves, while Liszewski (2-5-1) had nine saves in the loss.

The win gave CSU-Pueblo an early advantage in the Steel & Silver rivalry series between the schools.

This season's Steel & Silver Series is on a new, "winner-take-all" points system. In each of the nine intercollegiate athletics programs that both schools sponsor - men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's golf, women's cross country, softball, volleyball, and women's track and field - the school that earns the most wins in head-to-head competition will be awarded four points. If the head-to-head competitions are split evenly, each school will be awarded two points. The school with the best cumulative grade point average among student-athletes in the school's common sports will also be awarded five points. The school with the most points at the end of the academic year will be awarded the Ent Federal Credit Union Trophy, with the presentation taking place in the home city of the winning school.

Because of the new system, no points will be awarded for men's soccer until the teams play in Pueblo on Oct. 12. A win or a tie on that date will give CSU-Pueblo all four points toward the trophy. A win by UCCS will halve the points between the two schools.
