Friesen's first career goal not enough in loss to Mesa State

GRAND JUNCTION - Freshman Matt Friesen scored his first career goal but the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs was beaten Sunday by the Mesa State Mavericks.

UCCS (2-4, 0-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) cut a two-goal deficit in half in the 34th minute when Friesen, who scored 27 times for Rampart High School a season ago, scored his first collegiate goal after knocking in a Jeff Bettner pass.

The Mountain Lions mounted the early pressure, getting shots by Riley Gallagher and Greg Miley and a pair of corner kicks in the first six minutes, but it was Mesa State that struck first. In the 12th minutes, Eric Anderson collected a pass that had ricocheted off a UCCS defender and found himself looking at an open net. He slid the ball in for his fifth goal of the season.

The Mountain Lions, demoralized by the bad fortune, would get dinged again quickly. Three minutes, 22 seconds after the first score, Jake Jobe knocked a Sam Dixon pass past UCCS goalkeeper Adam Liszewski (2-4) to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions would mount some late pressure, getting the final five shots of the match, but couldn't get any of them past Mesa State goalkeeper Josh Tinaglia. The junior made six saves to earn his fifth win of the season against one loss.

Mesa State improved to 5-1, 2-0 in the RMAC.
