UCCS earns two points in Steel & Silver Series with win over CSU-Pueblo

PUEBLO - Jeff Bettner had the game-winning goal for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to defeat the Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves 2-1 in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Rawlings Sport Complex.

The last time the Mountain Lions beat the Thunderwolves was Sept. 14, 2005. Since then, CSU-Pueblo defeated UCCS in six straight games.

Late in the first half after a Mountain Lion foul, Thunderwolves forward Udobong Obotette converted on a penalty kick with 5:24 remaining in the half to put them ahead 1-0.

UCCS struck back with six minutes remaining in the second half to tie the game. After a blocked shot by Greg Miley, Matt Friesen got the rebound to score the tying goal.

That would send the game into the first overtime where the score remained tied.

In the second overtime with less then three minutes remaining, Bettner converted on a free kick for the Mountain Lions to score the game-winning goal.

With the win, UCCS moved to 4-7-2, 2-5-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CSU-Pueblo went to 8-6, 4-4 RMAC.

Adam Liszewski 4-7-2 earned the win for the Mountain Lions with seven saves. Chris Smith 6-6 took the loss with two saves.

With the win both UCCS and CSU-Pueblo earned two points toward the Steel & Silver Series, since each team had each won one game in head-to-head competition this season.

This season's Steel & Silver Series is on a new, "winner-take-all" points system. In each of the 10 intercollegiate athletics programs that both schools sponsor - men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's golf, women's cross country, softball, volleyball, and women's indoor and outdoor track and field - the school that earns the most wins in head-to-head competition will be awarded four points. If the head-to-head competitions are split evenly, each school will be awarded two points. The school with the best cumulative grade point average among student-athletes in the school's common sports will also be awarded five points. The school with the most points at the end of the academic year will be awarded the Ent Federal Credit Union Trophy, with the presentation taking place in the home city of the winning school.
