DURANGO -- You know things aren't going your way when even the weather conspires against you.

Adam Liszewski was brilliant in goal but the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs nonetheless were beaten Sunday, 1-0 by the Fort Lewis Skyhawks.

Fort Lewis' goal came less than three minutes after the teams returned to the field from a 30+-minute delay for lightning and hail. Casey Roberts served up a high ball on an indirect free kick that Dave Barden managed to get his head on. The ball went high and drifted over Liszewski, who had come off his line to play the pass.

"I came out for it but they got a head on it before I got there," said Liszewski. "He headed it over the top."

It was the only mistake Liszewski made. The freshman Mesa, Ariz., made eight saves, some of which were remarkable.

"He made two or three great saves," said UCCS coach Flavio Mazzetti. "He kept us in the game."

So did the UCCS defense. The Mountain Lions (1-8, 1-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) kept the preseason No. 1-ranked Skyhawks in check for most of the afternoon.

"The defense played great; probably the best game we've played this season," said Liszewski. "We did a good job clearing balls and one-on-one defending. We didn't allow any breakaways today."

Fort Lewis improved to 6-2, 5-2 in the RMAC.

Just minutes before the weather delay, UCCS had a goal nullified when the referee judged that goalkeeper interference had occurred on the play.

"That was just bad luck," said Mazzetti.

And it's hard to overcome both luck and weather.
