Diane Sheldon and
Heidi Fehringer each reached double-digit kills as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs improved to 5-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference by defeating the Colorado Christian Cougars 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 30-16) Saturday evening at the Cougar Event Center.
Akers led all players with 11 kills and an impressive .409 attack percentage, in addition to chipping in a combined four blocks in the win.
Sheldon and Fehringer each had 10 kills for UCCS (7-8), while
Cortney Weedman and
Jessica Stewart each logged 19 assists.
Laura Meeter added a match-high 19 digs.
Colorado Christian led 10-8 in Game 1, but the Mountain Lions answered with a 13-3 run behind two kills each by Akers and Sheldon. The Cougars narrowed the gap to 25-21, but Akers had a kill, a block and even an assists on a Sheldon kill as UCCS closed out the 30-22 win.
Colorado Christian led again in Game 2, this time 6-5, only to see UCCS score five straight thanks to two service aces by
Jessica Stewart. The Mountain Lions advantage had shrunk to one at 14-13 when Sheldon and Akers each recorded a kill and shared a block to spark a 4-0 run. Fehringer scored UCCS' final four points with a quartet of kills.
UCCS opened Game 3 with a 14-4 advantage behind two aces by Sheldon and another by Stewart. The Mountain Lions were never seriously threatened after that.
Trisha Witkop had 10 kills for Colorado Christian (1-14, 0-6 RMAC).
