COLORADO SPRINGS -- Laura Meeter tied a UCCS record with six service aces and Brooke Akers added 16 kills as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs remained unbeaten in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 win over the Chadron State Eagles Saturday at the Lions' Den.

Meeter matched the school record also held by Jessica Hollingshead, Melissa Botos and Lara McLaughlin.

"(Coach Jessica Wood) was having me try a new serve this week," said Meeter. "It's working out really well."

The senior from Colorado Springs Christian School also added 14 digs to complement Andrea Weedman's 15 and Stephanie Laband's 13 as the UCCS defense held Chadron State to a .074 hitting mark.

"We have so many upperclassmen and that helps us defensively," said Meeter, the team's libero. "We have a good court sense with each other."

Akers, a senior who transferred to UCCS from the Air Force Academy prior to the 2006 season, had 31 kills during this weekend's two matches (5.17 per game). On Saturday, Heidi Fehringer added 11 kills and five blocks for the Mountain Lions (6-7, 4-0 RMAC), who hit .270.

Setters Cortney Weedman and Jessica Stewart ran the UCCS offense efficiently, recording 23 and 22 assists respectively. The Mountain Lions run a 6-2 offense, which means that the setters substitute when the rotation puts either on the front line. While that has the advantage of keeping the diminutive duo out of the blocking game, Stewart also noted another benefit.

"Courtney and I have been helping each other out in making adjustments," said Stewart. "We're like each other's mini-coaches on the sideline."

Going into Saturday's match, there was some concern that the Mountain Lions might suffer a letdown after Friday's emotional win over Nebraska-Kearney. Those worries proved unfounded as UCCS fell behind early in each of Saturday's three games only to confidently and methodically catch up and march past the Eagles.

Chadron State (4-10, 1-3 RMAC) opened Game 1 ahead 7-4, but three three-point rallies helped UCCS surge to an 18-13 lead. The Mountain Lions took the game as Akers scored seven kills.

The Eagles scored four of the first five points in Game 2 only to see Laband serve a four-point rally to tie. Meeter served back-to-back-to-back aces later in the game to help UCCS roll to the win.

Meeter was serving again in Game 3 when the Mountain Lions scored six straight points to turn a slim 9-8 advantage into a comfortable 15-8 lead. UCCS led 15-10 when a block by Cassey Santucci sparked a 4-0 run and the Mountain Lions coasted the rest of the way.

UCCS had five blocks in the third game after managing just three combined in the first two.

"Coach told the blockers to get up and block the outside balls because they were getting past us," said Stewart. "Our blockers weren't timing their jumps well (in the first two games)."

The Mountain Lions head to Denver Friday to play Metro State. A win there would tie the UCCS school record for most consecutive RMAC wins to start the season. The 2005 Mountain Lions opened the season with a 5-0 RMAC mark.
