No. 16 Washburn dispatches UCCS

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs volleyball team (2-7) lost Game 4 of the Rockhurst Classic to the No. 16-ranked Washburn Lady Blues (8-1) 3-0 to close out the tournament. The Mountain Lions will host Regis to begin conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7:00 P.M.

The Mountain Lions came into game one after the tough loss the previous match and looked ready to play. They were there, point for point with Washburn as the score came to a tie of 9-9. The Lady Blues then kicked it up a notch, going on a 17-7 run to bring the score to 26-16. The Mountain Lions then adjusted, going point for point with the Lady Blues but it was not enough as Washburn took the game 30-19.

Game 2 saw the Lady Blues taking the momentum of game one and carrying it over. They came into the game with intensity and resolve and the Mountain Lions found themselves unable to react to the pace. The Mountain Lions, in attempting to keep up with the Lady Blues, committed 13 hitting errors. The Lady Blues won Game 2 30-23.

In Game 3, having already played 15 games of volleyball in the last two days, the Mountain Lions ran out of steam. They played with heart, but it was not enough to surmount the Lady Blues' offense and defense as the Mountain Lions lost the game 30-21.

Brooke Akers led the Mountain Lions with 13 kills on 29 attempts. Heidi Fehringer had seven kills on 24 attempts.

Monica Miesner led the Lady Blues with 12 kills on 30 attempts. Stephanie Nitz had 10 kills on 14 attempts.
