Mountain Lions drop final game of season to Mavericks

COLORADO SPRINGS -- The Mesa State College Mavericks defeated the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium in the final game of the season for both teams.

The Mountain Lions (3-16, 2-12 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) outshot the Mavericks 20-15 but the play of Billy Martinez proved to be the difference. Martinez replaced Mesa State goalkeeper Josh Tinaglia at halftime and shut down the Mountain Lions in the second half making six saves on 14 shots.

"[Martinez] was amazing in goal for [the Mavericks]," said Jeff Girali, who is a junior graduating in the Spring. "We put shots where they needed to be placed, and he was able to get to them."

The Mavericks (7-6-4, 6-5-3 RMAC) got on the board first in the fifth minute when a shot by Nathan Poirier got deflected into the Mountain Lions' goal.

The Mountain Lions responded in the 29th minute when freshman Nick Christopher played the ball to a slashing Jeff Bettner in the Mavericks' penalty box. Bettner one-timed a shot past Tinaglia for his fourth goal of the season.

"The goal gave us a lot of momentum going into the second half," said Girali.

Despite getting seven of the first eight shots of the second half, the Mountain Lions were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. The Mavericks scored the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute when a defensive breakdown allowed Ben Potter to send a through ball to Eric Anderson. Anderson slid the ball past a diving Michael Bergren on the breakaway for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Bergren replaced Mark Howard in goal for the Mountain Lions in the second half and finished with five saves.

The Mavericks added an insurance goal in the 76th minute when Dustin Stafford curved a corner kick over the outstretched hand of Bergren and into the net.
