COLORADO SPRINGS -- Brooke Akers had 17 kills, including nine in the second game alone, as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs remained unbeaten in the Lions' Den with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-22, 32-30) victory over the Colorado Christian Cougars Friday.

The Mountain Lions (14-9, 12-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) are now 8-0 at home this season. Their final home match of the season will be Saturday against Metro State unless UCCS wins the right to host the RMAC postseason tournament. The Mountain Lions came into Friday's match tied with Fort Lewis and Nebraska-Kearney for the top spot in the conference.

"What better honor is there than to host the RMAC championships?" said Akers. "That's extremely important to us. Every time we're at practice or on the road, we're thinking about that."

But standing in the way are the Roadrunners, who have beaten UCCS 21 of the 24 times the programs have met.

"Metro is going to be a great match for us," said Akers. "It's great preparation for postseason. They're a strong team. To win against them would be great as we move on in our season."

Cassie Schott led Colorado Christian (2-22, 1-13 RMAC) with 14 kills Friday.

Akers committed just two hitting errors on 30 attempts to finish with an outstanding .500 hitting mark, her second best of the season. The senior hit .583 against Chadron State on Sept. 15.

Diane Sheldon added 12 kills for UCCS Friday, while Andrea Weedman led the defense with 1 digs. Cortney Weedman and Jessica Stewart had 18 and 17 assists respectively.

The Mountain Lions opened Game 1 with a 15-4 lead behind five kills and a service ace by Akers. The Cougars never got the deficit below double figures.

Akers dominated Game 2, logging nine kills and a .615 hitting mark. The rest of the Mountain Lions, though, combined for a meager .033 mark as Colorado Christian's defense started figuring out the UCCS attack.

The Cougars' momentum carried into Game 3 as neither team was able to build more than a three-point lead.

"Colorado Christian is always a scrappy team, no matter what," said Akers. "They really picked it up in Game 3."

Colorado Christian served for game point at 29-28, but a Sheldon kill evened the score. UCCS finally eked out a 32-30 win on a Trisha Witkop hitting error.

"We maybe gave up for a little while and let them get into the game," said Akers, "but we pushed through at the end."
