The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs dropped a heartbreaker Wednesday night with a 2-1 double-overtime loss to the 21st nationally-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves in Pueblo.
The Mountain Lions struggles in their last game against the Colorado Mines Orediggers pushed head coach Flavio Mazzetti to make a drastic move. After the first half of the game that had UCCS down 1-0 that Mazzetti replaced nine of the eleven starters.
"Some of the guys took the switch pretty hard," said
Bryan Stoeber. "The guys who haven't played much took the opportunity to show what they had by coming out and playing against a high quality team."
The move paid off as the Mountain Lions dominated the first 30 minutes of the second half, putting up six shots as well as the game-tying goal.
In the 65th minute the Mountain Lions knotted the game at one with a goal.
Mark Brehm sent a long ball over the top of the defense and Stoeber ran on to it.
"I was running in and I saw the keeper off his line," said Stoeber. "I had been watching the keeper during warmups and noticed he was a little shaky with his hands. My main goal was to just put the ball on goal. It wasn't a really good shot but it slipped through his hands and went into the net."
At the end of regulation the game was still tied at one. However, the Thunderwolves would break the tie late in the second overtime.
A free-kick was sent into the mix in front of the Mountain Lions' goal and dribbled out of the mess just above the penalty box. Dylan Cook scrambled out to get it and turned and shot the ball back against his body. The ball deflected off of a Mountain Lions defender and landed in the back of the net.
"We had our chances there in the second half and in both overtimes, but we weren't able to put it in," said Mazzetti. "Sometimes that's how it goes."
The Mountain Lions' goalkeeper
Isaac Kostrow gave up two goals and had five saves in his first collegiate start.
The Mountain Lions head home for a two-game home stand against Masters University on Friday night and Fort Lewis on Sunday afternoon.
