Weedman helps serve up a win at Chadron

The Mountain Lions went to Nebraska needing a split and got exactly that Saturday.

Behind 16 kills by Diane Sheldon, a .266 hitting percentage and strong service game by Cortney Weedman, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs topped the Chadron State Eagles 3-1 (26-30, 30-19, 30-18, 30-19) at Armstrong Gym in Chadron, Neb.

The Mountain Lions hitting efficiency was their best yet this season, bettering the .213 mark the achieved on Sept. 1 against Northwest Nazarene. It was UCCS' best overall hitting performance since Oct. 8, 2005 when the team hit .295 against Regis. It was the Mountain Lions' best mark on the road since Nov. 6, 2004 when they hit .280 at Colorado Christian.

Jill Wrenn added 13 kills for UCCS (8-10, 5-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) and had only one hitting error. The senior's .522 hitting mark was her best since Aug. 27, 2004 and was the third-best of her career.

Caroline Ottino and Brooke Akers contributed 12 and 10 kills respectively.

Jamie O'Brien led Chadron State (1-19, 0-10 RMAC) with 15 kills.

Game 1 was tied at 14 when a service error, two attack errors, a reception error and a ball handling error handed the Eagles a 19-14 lead. UCCS was able to close to 28-26 on a Weedman kill but, fittingly, two more attack errors ended the game.

The Mountain Lions trailed 4-2 in Game 2 when a pair of Sheldon kills sparked a 6-0 run. It was 17-10 when CCS put together a 6-0 run and never looked back. Weedman was serving during both Mountain Lions runs.

Weedman was serving again when UCCS went on a 7-0 run in Game 3 to grab a commanding 25-14 lead. A pair of kills by Lindsey Myers helped UCCS close the game.

In Game 4, Weedman served five- and four-point runs. She also had one of her career-high five service aces.

Weedman and fellow setter Jessica Stewart added 23 and 26 assists respectively.

The Mountain Lions will return to Nebraska Friday for the second RMAC East/West crossover tournament. UCCS will face Adams State, Western State and New Mexico Highlands at Kearney.
