The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs soccer team opened the 2006 season by equaling the highest goals scored in the Flavio Mazzetti era in a 4-0 victory over the University of Mary Marauders Thursday at Salt Lake City.

The Mountain Lions have scored four goals on three other occasions since Mazzetti took over as coach prior to the 2003 season. UCCS had matching 4-1 wins in 2003 over Colorado State-Pueblo and Montana State-Billings and a 4-2 wins over Westminster and CSU-Pueblo in 2005. All four of those performances were on the Mountain Lions' home field. Thursday's victory also marks Mazzetti's largest margin of victory.

UCCS is playing a three game set in Utah, facing Dana Friday and host Westminster on Saturday.

Mark Brehm opened the scoring in the 39th minute when he took an Eric Foulk pass and launched a right-footer from 22 yards. UCCS made it 2-0 shortly after the half when Art Cutter headed in a cross by Jeff Korb in the 47th minute.

Ten minutes later, Juan Nolasco drilleed a low shot to the far post on a pass by freshman Bryan Stoeber. Stoeber then completed the scoring by converting on a James McMonigle pass in the 63rd minute.

Junior goalkeeper James Bjorklund made one save in recording his first career shutout. In front of him Cutter, Brehm, Ryan Beebe, Jeff Bettner plus reserves Seth Bird, Jeff Girali and Tristan Robinson were dominant, allowing just three shots attempted.

UCCS, meanwhile, peppered U. of Mary goalkeeper A.J. Oliver with 27 shots, 20 of which were on goal.
