SILVER CITY, N.M. -- The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs wasn't just invited to the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers' block party Thursday, the Mountain Lions were the guests of honor.
Nebraska-Kearney blocked 18 UCCS attacks in blasting the Mountain Lions 3-0 (30-24, 30-21, 30-17) in the quarterfinals of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament. The loss ended UCCS' season with a 14-14 record.
"It was a good season for us," said UCCS coach Jessica Wood. "I wish it could have gone beyond tonight, but the girls have a lot to be proud of."
It wasn't so much a case of the Mountain Lions playing poorly as it was the Lopers' excellence. Nebraska-Kearney earned its 27th win of the season against six losses and the 14-win difference between them and the Mountain Lions showed.
"They were huge," Wood said of Nebraska-Kearney. "They were perfect in nearly everything they did."
Nikki Scott was the biggest of the rejection specialists for the Lopers, assisting on 13 blocks. Kelli Bunger added six assisted blocks and had a match-high 12 kills.
UCCS'
Diane Sheldon matched Bunger's 12 kills, while
Jill Wrenn added nine and
Stephanie Laband had seven.
