Regis sweeps UCCS

Locking up a spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference playoffs will have to wait a few days for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

The Mountain Lions dropped Tuesday's match to the Regis Rangers 3-0 (30-21, 30-16, 30-27) at Denver, keeping UCCS (13-13, 10-8 RMAC), at least for now, from clinching a spot in the playoffs.

The Mountain Lions' magic number continues to be one, meaning they can clinch if they beat Colorado School of Mines on Saturday at the Lions' Den. UCCS can also clinch in Colorado State-Pueblo or Western State loses in either of their two remaining matches.

Chelsea Pavlik led Regis (15-12, 12-6 RMAC) with 14 kills, while Liz Franz added nine and Rachel Ross had eight.

Diane Sheldon led UCCS with eight kills. Andrea Weedman added seven kills and 12 digs.

Regis took Game 1 behind a .390 hitting mark. The Rangers were so efficient that the Mountain Lions, despite hitting .314 themselves, were unable to score more than two consecutive points the entire game.

The Rangers grabbed control of Game 2 from the outset, with Pavlik getting two kills to help them open the game 10-1. The Mountain Lions never got closer than seven afterwards.

UCCS managed its only two-point lead at 5-3 in Game 3 but that quickly evaporated. Down 29-24, the Mountain Lions scored three straight to make it interesting but another kill by Pavlik closed out the match.
