Kelley Angel and
Caroline Ottino combined for 36 kills as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs evened its record at the Amerisuites/Mountain Lion Invitational with a 3-1 victory over the St. Mary's Rattlers on Saturday.
St. Mary's overplayed the outside to slow down UCCS hitters
Andrea Weedman,
Diane Sheldon,
Jill Wrenn and
Stephanie Laband. The powerful Mountain Lion quartet was held to a combined 26 kills and a microscopic .056 hitting percentage.
The consequence of the strategy, though, was to leave Ottino and Angel open for one-on-one situations and able to exploit the slide play. It also left the Rattlers susceptible to the dump, allowing setter
Jocelyn Evans to get 11 kills and a .550 hitting percentage to go along with her 29 assists. Angel finished with 19 kills and Ottino had 17.
The Mountain Lions (3-5) finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. They will open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference portion of their schedule at home on Friday against Western State.
Mallary Moehrig led St. Mary's (2-5) with 12 kills.
Angel and Evans were named to the All-Tournament team from UCCS. Libero Katy Migl was chosen as St. Mary's representative.
Wayne State compiled a 4-0 record to win the inaugural AmeriSuites/Mountain Lion Invitational, hosted by the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
Cameron went 3-1 to finish second in the tournament, which was held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Adams State went 2-1, UCCS was 2-2, St. Mary's went 0-3 and Angelo State went 0-4.
