Sunday's soccer match at Sand Creek Stadium between the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the Regis Rangers was a matchup between the philosophies of patience and pressure. But as a gauge to measure the merits of each, the 1-1 tie proved inconclusive.

And to the Mountain Lions, unsatisfactory.

"We're very disappointed," said UCCS goalkeeper Justin Elliott, who saw his first action of the season. "We should have beat these guys. We let them walk over us instead of taking advantage of the game when we had our chances."

Jeff Halligan scored in the 22nd minute, but the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs was unable to make the goal stand up in a 1-1 tie with the Rangers.

Halligan's goal came on a long throw in by senior defender Brian Best, who excels at getting distance on his throws. His toss from 25 yards up the sideline found Marcus Reynolds, who chested the ball to the ground. Halligan knocked it in for his second goal this season.

"Marcus beat his guy to the ball and chested it down right in front of me," said Halligan. "If he hadn't have gotten to that ball I wouldn't have scored."

Throughout the match, the Mountain Lions methodically worked the ball upfield, looking for quality scoring chances. Regis, on the other hand, aggressively challenged every pass and was quick to send long balls up the field and put shots on goal. The result was the Rangers getting 12 shots on goal to UCCS' six and having a 12-6 edge in corner kicks, although there was little differential in real scoring chances.

Regis (1-4-2, 1-4-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) evened the score on a transition play in the 65th minute. Guillermo Mazier sent a long pass over the top that Sven Trautman tracked down without breaking stride. Trautman, who had a step on the UCCS defense, launched a low shot that beat a diving Elliott on his right side.

Elliott (0-0-1) entered the match in the 28th minute when UCCS starter Chris Hovasse was injured during a collision while making a save.

"I wasn't really ready for that," said Elliott. "But once the call happens, the adrenaline starts pumping and the instincts take over. I've played goalie for so long, you just know what you have to do."

Ruben Martinez (0-0-1) made his first start of the season in goal for Regis.

UCCS (4-4-1, 3-2-1 RMAC) is now 0-2-1 in its past three matches.
