Volleyball drops first two matches of season

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs' much-anticipated 2005 volleyball season got off to a rocky start Friday as the Mountain Lions dropped their first two matches of the season at the ASU Concho Classic at San Angelo, Texas.

The Mountain Lions lost to the Texas A&M Commerce Lions 3-2 (25-30, 30-23, 26-30, 30-27, 15-11) in the morning match, then were topped by the host Angelo State Rambelles 3-1 (19-30, 32-30, 30-23, 30-24) in the evening.

UCCS went as far as its defense would take it against TAMU Commerce, holding the Lions to hitting percentages of .054 and .032 in winning Games 1 and 3. Commerce hit .333, .250 and .455 while beating UCCS in Games 2, 4 and 5.

Newcomer Diane Sheldon, a sophomore transfer from Navy, led the Mountain Lions with 16 kills while Andrea Weedman added 12. Jill Wrenn was UCCS' most efficient hitter with a .500 hitting percentage on eight kills.

The Mountain Lions' two freshman setters, Jocelyn Evans and Jessica Stewart, had 19 and 12 assists respectively. Laura Meeter had a team-high nine digs as UCCS managed only 32 digs as a team.

UCCS took also took the first game against Angelo State, holding the host Rambelles to a -.027 hitting percentage. Angelo State outlasted UCCS for a 32-30 Game 2 win before rolling in Games 3 and 4.

The Mountain Lions did a better job keeping the ball in play by recording 81 digs, 26 by Weedman who also added 11 kills.

Sheldon again led the offense with 13 kills while Kelley Angel added 12.
