It was a very bad weekend for monkeys at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

That's because the Mountain Lions got a couple of them off their backs.

The UCCS volleyball team ended its second losing streak in three nights as the Mountain Lions swept the Regis Rangers 3-0 (30-18, 30-15, 30-18) Saturday evening at the Lions' Den.

It was UCCS' first win over Regis since Nov. 2, 1992 and only the second ever in 22 meetings. On Thursday, the Mountain Lions beat Metro State, ending a streak of futility that had lasted since Sept. 20, 1994.

"It feels great because we swept everyone this weekend " nobody took a game off us," said UCCS middle blocker Kelley Angel, who as a redshirt junior has been with the team longer than any other current player. "To do that with Metro and with Regis feels awesome."

UCCS (12-7, 9-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) now has sole possession of first place in the RMAC's Western Division, leading New Mexico Highlands by a game. The ascension of UCCS, Highlands and Colorado Mines this season has turned the RMAC's power elite on its ear.

"The RMAC has gone crazy this year," said Angel. "Teams are winning that you wouldn't expect."

And teams are losing that normally don't lose. Regis, a perrennial national powerhouse, fell to (3-16, 2-9 RMAC).

Saturday, the Mountain Lions defense was suffocating, holding Regis to a negative hitting percentage (-.123).

"We came together and worked as a team," said Angel. "(UCCS did well at) putting up the blocks and digging the ball when the block wasn't there."

Largely because the match was so quick, the other statistics arenâ't all that impressive. Laura Meeter led the Mountain Lions with nine digs, while Stephanie Laband and Jill Wrenn added six each. Also contributing to the mediocre numbers was that the Mountain Lions were so quick on their blocks and defensive rotations that Regis often attempted ill-advised shots- with predictable results.

"We had great blocks up," said Angel. "We were determined not to let them win and we just fought for it."

Angel led the Mountain Lions will 11 kills and five blocks (four of which were assisted). Diane Sheldon added eight kills as UCCS hit an efficient .295.

Angel and Sheldon had four kills each as the Mountain Lions ran away with Game 1 30-18. Regis took an early 2-0 lead, but UCCS followed with a 5-0 run and never looked back.

Angel and Sheldon added three kills each in Game 2, during which UCCS never trailed. The Mountain Lions had five of their eight blocks in the 30-15 win.

Angel posted her final four kills in Game 3, while Jill Wrenn added three kills and three digs.

Rachel Ross led Regis with eight kills.

"It feels awesome," said Angel. "Breaking records feels great."

So does making pedestrians out of some monkeys.
