Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Doug Fitzgerald - UCCS Sports Information Director

Soccer falls at Regis

Lucas Grein scored a goal in the 85th minute to send the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs soccer team to its fifth straight loss, a 2-1 setback against the Regis Rangers Sunday in Denver.

The Mountain Lions (5-9-1, 3-6-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) are now 1-7-1 in their past nine matches.

The slide has made UCCS' playoff hopes, once a seeming certainty, sketchy at best. The Mountain Lions have 10 points (three for each conference win and one for each tie) with two matches remaining. Third-place Regis has 14 points and also has two matches left. Thus UCCS must win both of its final two matches and hope that Regis loses both or loses one and ties the other.

But as unlikely as that seems, it's entirely possible. Regis has two tough matches remaining, Metro State at home on Friday and at Fort Lewis next Sunday. UCCS, meanwhile, plays struggling Colorado Christian on Friday and Colorado School of Mines next Sunday, both at home.

After a scoreless first half Sunday, Jeff Moore scored his team-best sixth goal in the 62nd minute with Brian Best getting the assist.

Regis' Cody Berg netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season at 74:37 to tie the match at one.

The Rangers (7-5-3 overall, 4-4-2 RMAC) got the game-winner when Grein scored with just under six minutes remaining. Regis has now won six of its past eight matches and is undefeated in its past six outings.

RU goalkeeper Trevor Steege (now 6-5-2) made four saves in the winning effort while UCCS' Chris Hovasse (two saves) fell to 4-8-0.
