Game Recap: Volleyball | | Doug Fitzgerald - UCCS Sports Information Director

Volleyball can't overcome Mines, bus

Kelley Angel and Diane Sheldon each had 16 kills but the University of Colorado at Colorado was unable to overcome a huge block and a long bus trip in a 3-2 (30-22, 26-30, 30-18, 26-30, 15-12) loss to the Colorado Mines Orediggers Sunday in Golden, Colo.

Mines (13-3, 7-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) showed a formidable net game, blocking 16 Mountain Lions attacks. Nicole Leeper, obviously appropriately named, led the Orediggers with one solo block and seven assisted blocks.

UCCS (9-7, 6-2) beat Chadron State Saturday then embarked on the 308-mile bus trip after the match. The trip lasted well into the night, making Sunday's 3 p.m. start time all the more difficult.

The lethargy of the trip showed in Game 1, as the Mountain Lions quickly fell into a 10-2 hole from which they could not recover, falling 30-22.

Mines led Game 2 24-22 but the Mountain Lions rallied behind three Angel kills to win 30-26.

The Orediggers rebounded well, racing to a 6-1 lead in Game 3. UCCS rallied to close to 8-7, but consecutive kills by Samantha Bauer spurred a Mines run that led to a 30-22 win. Bauer led the Orediggers with 16 kills.

UCCS led Game 4 26-24 when freshman Sarah Broerman served consecutive aces. Two kills by Angel gave UCCS a 30-26 win and forced a deciding third game.

In Game 5, four Mines blocks overcame three Sheldon kills as Mines claimed the game 15-12 and the match.
