The Fort Lewis Skyhawks showed again Sunday why they have won four consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles.
Senior forward Brent Diaz has a goal and an assist to lead the Skyhawks, ranked No. 24 nationally, to a convincing 3-0 victory over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions.
"Fort Lewis is just a better team, period," said UCCS coach Eddy Dietz. "They beat us to loose balls and played very well."
Phil DeBoalt and Anthony Bonanno also scored for Fort Lewis (1-0, 1-0 RMAC).
"We can't really complain about anything, this is a good start for us," Bonanno said. "We worked on some different things on defense, got the offense going."
UCCS was frustrated offensively, managing to get only two of their 10 shots on goal. By contrast, Fort Lewis took 21 shots, 11 of which were on goal.
The Mountain Lions' frustration showed midway through the second half when Chris Keen was ejected for booting Fort Lewis goalkeeper Devon Zimmerman after a free kick.
Adam Ewig took the kick from the top of the FLC box and Zimmerman caught his own deflection in the air. That's when Keen kicked him in the knee, prompting officials to issue a red card.
