WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team (3-2) falls to Emporia State (5-0) by a final score of 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 14-25, 25-20) to begin the Peggy Martin Challenge.

Kristen Sciacca started off the first set with a kill to give UCCS a 1-0 lead. That would be the only lead that the Mountain Lions had in the first set though, as the Gorillas went on a 9-2 run shortly after. The Mountain Lions could not mount a comeback, and fell 25-17 in the first set.

Kim Catlett led the Mountain Lions in the first set with four kills and one service ace. She finished the match with team-highs of 14 points, 10 kills, four service aces, and added 13 digs.

Heather Sanders helped UCCS jump out to another early lead in the second set with three consecutive service aces. Sanders finished the match with those three service aces, and a match-high 23 digs.

The Mountain Lions led by as many as six points before Emporia State made a late 7-0 run to take the second set and go up 2-0 in the match.

Jordan Banich had her best offensive set of the match in the second, with four of her seven kills coming in the set.  Banich also added three service aces, 11 digs, and a match-high six blocks in the match.

The third set began much like the first two, with an early lead by UCCS. The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 15-5 lead, but unlike the first two sets, they held on to their lead and won third set by 11 points.

UCCS dominated the net in the third, and recorded six of the team's 10 total blocks in the set.  Emily Whitelaw led the way with three of her four block assists in the third set. Whitelaw also had a great offensive contribution in the match with eight kills.

Kristen Sciacca and Cassidy Bush each also added two blocks in the third set. Sciacca finished the match with five block assists, six kills, and two service aces. Bush recorded seven kills, two block assists, and the team's only solo block.

Each team led in the fourth set, which proved to be the most closely contested of the match. UCCS trailed by two, late in the set, before Emporia State made another late run to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.

Setter Grace Gordon had a great fourth set, as she recorded 10 of her match-high 33 assists in the final set. Gordon also added six digs, one block assist, and one service ace in the match.
