UCCS Makes Post Season Push This Weekend on the Road
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team prepares for its final regular season matches as the Mountain Lions play the Orediggers of No. 13 Colorado Mines (22-5 / 16-2 RMAC) on Friday night and the Cougars of Colorado Christian (18-10 / 12-6 RMAC) on Saturday night.
UCCS is currently in ninth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and is trying to make a push towards moving into eighth place as the top eight teams make the postseason tournament.
There are a few different scenarios which would allow UCCS to move up one spot in the standings to solidify a post season appearance. The most simple explanation is that the Mountain Lions must win one more match than Fort Lewis (8-17 / 8-9 RMAC), who is currently in eight place.
If UCCS does win one more match than Fort Lewis this weekend, both teams would conclude the regular season with the same conference record, but the Mountain Lions hold the tie breaker due a 3-2 win in the only heads-up match between the two teams this season.
The Skyhawks also conclude their regular season this weekend as they play New Mexico Highlands (12-14 / 10-17 RMAC) on Friday night and CSU-Pueblo on Saturday night.
UCCS begins the weekend with a match against the top team in the RMAC as they face No. 13 Colorado Mines in Golden, Colo. The Mountain Lions lost to the Orediggers earlier this season in five sets after they led 2-0 in the match.
Colorado Mines enters the weekend ranked first in the regional rankings and first in the conference for hitting percent (.241), assists per set (14.16), and kills per set (15). The Orediggers are led on offense by Melanie Wannamaker, who ranks first in the RMAC for hitting percent (.390), and second for kills per set (4.46).
The Mountain Lions finish the regular season on Saturday night as they play the Cougars of Colorado Christian in Lakewood, Colo. UCCS leads the all-time series against CCU 25-16, including a five set win in the first conference match of this season.
UCCS was led in the first match by Jordan Banich, who recorded a team-high 17 kills. Banich leads the team in kills per set (2.87), and leads the RMAC in service aces per set (.37).
The Cougars are second in the RMAC for hitting percent (.237), and are led on offense by Taylor Sturms who is first in the RMAC for kills per set (4.71).
