Mountain Lions Fall for the First Time This Season
CANYON, Texas - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team (3-1) suffers its first loss of the season tonight as the Mountain Lions fall to No. 10 ranked West Texas A&M (5-0) in straight sets (20-25, 21-25, 21-25) in the final match of the BritKare Lady Buff Classic.
UCCS scored the first two points in the first set, but West Texas A&M quickly turned things around as they went on a 9-2 to take control early on. The Mountain Lions tried to battle back and got within two points, but the Lady Buffs proved to be too resilient in the first set as they went on to win 25-20.
Kim Catlett led UCCS in the set with seven digs and four kills. Grace Gordon also had a good productive first set with nine assists, five digs, and one kill. Gordon finished with a match-high 28 assists, with six digs and two kills.
The Mountain Lions and Lady Buffs traded points through the early part of the second set, and were tied 8-8 before West Texas A&M strung together a series of points to take a firm lead. UCCS responded with a 6-0 run of its own to climb back into the set. The Mountain Lions tried to make a comeback, but just like in the first set, they fell short 25-21.
The Lady Buffs began the third set with a 10-3 run, which again would be more than the Mountain Lions could come back from.
Kim Catlett had another great offensive set as she scored five kills and four digs. She finished with a match-high 10 kills with 15 digs.
Grace Gordon and Jordan Banich were each named to the 2013 BritKare Lady Buff Classic All-Tournament Team. Gordon led the Mountain Lions with 8.53 assists per set. Banich averaged 2.73 kills per set with 20 digs, nine blocks and six service aces in the tournament.
Up Next: UCCS will travel to Warrensburg next weekend to participate in the Peggy Martin Challenge hosted by Central Missouri. The first of four games for the Mountain Lions will be on Friday as they take on Emporia State (4-0) at 9 a.m.
