UCCS Opens the Season With a 3-1 Win Against Lubbock Christian

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team (1-0) defeats Lubbock Christian (0-1) by a final score of 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 25-18) to begin the 2013 season.

UCCS and Lubbock Christian traded points midway through the first set as the teams were tied 11-11, before the Mountain Lions captured momentum. UCCS, led by Kim Catlett, went up by as many as seven on its way to a 25-22 win. Catlett recorded six kills in the set. Cassidy Bush and Jordan Banich also added three kills each in the set. Katie Bartlett had a kill and two service aces.

The second set was also closely contested and was tied 24-24 before Lubbock Christian claimed the next two points to tie the match at 1-1. Catlett led the Mountain Lions again on offense with five more kills. Emily Whitelaw recorded four kills in the set, while Kristen Sciacca added two kills, two service aces, and two block assists.

Sciacca started off the third set strong by recording three consecutive kills, accounting for three of the Mountain Lions' first seven points. She finished the set with a team-high five kills and added two block assists and one service ace. Catlett had another good set offensively with four kills. Banich, Bush, and Whitelaw each also had two kills in the set. Morgan Evans chipped in with two service aces and five assists as UCCS won the set 25-19

The fourth set was much like the previous three as both teams traded points midway through, with the scored tied 14-14. The Mountain Lions then went on an 8-3 run to gain firm control of the set, and the match. UCCS won the set 25-18 and the match 3-1. Whitelaw lead the Mountain Lions in the final set with five kills. The freshman finished her first collegiate match with 10 kills and five blocks. Sciacca also had a stellar debut as a Mountain Lions with 12 kills, three service aces and a game-high six blocks. Catlett led UCCS with a team-high 15 kills and a team-high 13 digs.

Setters Grace Gordon and Morgan Evans collaborated for 46 assists in the match. Gordon finished with 26 assists and nine digs. Evans recorded 20 assists and five digs in her first game as a Mountain Lion.

UCCS will be back in action later today when the Mountain Lions face Texas-Permian Basin at 4:30 p.m.
