2013 Volleyball Preview-Fourth of Four Editions: Setters
One of the most difficult positions for Coach Elder to replace on the volleyball court this season is the setter. The Mountain Lions have had two prolific setters commanding the court for the past four years: Cindy Bathelt and Lindsey Stich, who both rank in the top ten all-time in program history for career assists.
Stich, the most recent court general, finished her collegiate career last season eighth all-time at UCCS in assists (1,709). Last season, Stitch led the team in total assists (730) and assists per set (6.95).
The Mountain Lions also had a reliable second option last season to set the attack, freshman Grace Gordon. In 2012, Gordon was second on the team for assists (323) and assists per set (4.04). Gordon returns this season as a sophomore, looking to replicate the success of her recent predecessors.
Prior to joining the Mountain Lions, Gordon led Grandview High School to the 5A State Tournament three times as the starting setter. She was named to the Denver Post All-State team in 2009, the All-City team three times, the MaxPreps All-State Second Team in 2011 and was the starting setter for the 2011 All-State Games. Gordon was a two-time team captain and finished with more than 2,600 assists in her career. She also competed with the Colorado Volleyball Academy during the club season.
Gordon will be accompanied this season by newcomer Morgan Evans. Evans was the starting setter three consecutive seasons for the Colorado Springs Christian Lions. She was captain for her final two years and helped lead the Lions to three league championships. Evans was named the Tri-Peaks Player of the Year as a senior. That season, played 67 sets, recording 652 assists (9.7/per set), 90 attack kills, 194 digs and 58 service aces with a Colorado state rank of 58.
While acknowledging the stellar setters who have let the Mountain Lions in recent years, Coach Elder has no doubt that the position is in good hands, stating that "the two setters that we have now, are going to be great. I'm excited about our two young setters."
Gordon and Evans start setting the attack for the Mountain Lions this Friday, as UCCS travels to Canyon Texas for the 2013 season opener against Lubbock Christian.
