2013 Volleyball Preview-First of Four Editions: Outside Hitters
Editors Note: This is the first of four stories to come which will highlight the UCCS woman's volleyball team's primary positions, returning players, and new additions to the team.
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team will look vastly different than it did a season ago, as the Mountain Lions introduce first year head coach, Chrissy Elder, and return just two starters from last year: outside hitters Jordan Banich and Kim Catlett.
Banich returns this season as the greatest offensive threat from last season. In 2012, Banich had the team's second most kills (249) and kills per set (2.44). Coach Elder has high expectations for the top returning offensive player from last year, stating that "Banich is going to work hard, and if she is consistent, she's going to get kills."
Catlett enters 2013 as possibly the most well-rounded Mountain Lion from last year's team. In 2012, she was first on the team for service aces (30), second in digs (344) and digs per set (3.28), as well as third in kills (236) and kills per set (2.25). In regards to Catlett's role this season, Coach Elder says "Kim is going to be expected to be a much bigger leader and keep the team riled up. She is one of our best, all-around athletes, and we are going to need her to step up, and lead by example."
Amanda Bloom is also returns to the Mountain Lion team this season, and will be joined by freshmen additions Breanna Bliss and Cameron Girard. Bloom is the best blocker at the outside hitter position on the team, and also "has one of the heaviest arms on the team. So we are going to need her defensively, as well as her arm offensively" according to Coach Elder.
Freshmen newcomers Breanna Bliss and Cameron Girard look to add even more of an offensive threat to the Mountain Lion's outside hitter position this season.
