Koop Leads Mountain Lions to First Win of Season
Colorado Springs Colo.- The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's volleyball team gets their first win of the season as they beat California Poly Pomona 3-0, at the Grand Canyon University Invitational on September 1, 2012 in three consecutive sets (26-24, 25-15,25-16).
After trailing 24-20 in the first set, the Mountain Lions rallied to score the next six points to win the first set of the match. UCCS carried the momentum into the second set leading by as many as 12 points before winning 25-16. The third set proved to be much more closely contested as the score was 17-15 before the Mountain Lions went on an eight-to-one run to win the final set 25-16 and close out the match 3-0.
After just 5.5 points combined in both of the Mountain Lion's first two losses, middle blocker Megan Koop helped UCCS to victory with team highs of 13 points, nine kills, and six block assists.
Freshmen Kim Catlett's, Jordan Banich and Amanda bloom were also instrumental in the Mountain Lion victory. Catlett led the way in team attacks with 37and service aces with 3, scoring 12.5 points with eight kills while adding seven digs. Banich finished with 10.5 points, eight kills, and eleven digs. Bloom recorded five kills with 22 team attacks and 7.5 points.
Seniors Nikki Kinzer and Amy Einspahr added to the UCCS game both offensively and defensively combining for nine kills, and eight block assists helping the team out block Cal Poly Pomona 26-10.
Setters Lindsey Stich and Grace Gordon put the Mountain lions in position to out kill Cal Poly Pomona 40-32, with a kill percent of .201. Stich had a game high for assists with 19 and added five digs, with one kill. Gordon added 17 assists with 11 digs.
Defensive specialist Katie Maguire had a team high 15 digs as her counterpart Heather Sanders added six more.
