Mountain Lions get Tucked in first match of Marriott tournament
COLORADO SPRINGS- Andrea Tuck had 18 kills as the Adams State Grizzlies defeated the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 15-25, 25-8) Thursday evening in the first game of the 2008 Marriott Volleyball Invitational at the Lions'Den.
Karina Miastkowska had 13 kills and Molly Crockett added 12 for the Mountain Lions, who dropped to 3-2 on the season. Sonja Johnson added 10 kills and Jessica Stewart had 33 assists.
Darcy Jennings added 12 kills for Adams State (2-3), while Mary McNeil had 41 of her team's 47 assists.
UCCS fell behind early in the first set and trailed 20-15 when a Miastkowska kill and three consecutive blocks, all of which involved the 6-foot freshman from Northbrook, Ill., helped the Mountain Lions tie the set at 20. Adams State answered with kills by Kimberly Ingram and Sarah Dirmeyer and was able to hold that advantage, ending the set with a kill by Jennings.
The Mountain Lions dug themselves another hole in the second set, falling behind 9-5. A Lauren Orth kill and an assisted block by Miaskowska and Stewart gave UCCS its first lead of the match at 15-14, but that advantage quickly evaporated as the Grizzlies reeled off six straight points to take control of the set.
UCCS adjusted in the third set, switching from a two-setter alignment to a one-setter lineup. The change worked, as Miastkowska and Crockett each had two kills to lead UCCS to a 4-1 lead. Crockett added another kill and a pair of service aces as the Mountain Lions extended the lead to 10-4. Crockett added three more kills as UCCS cruised to a 25-15 win.
he mojo didn't last. Jennings served the Grizzlies to a 9-0 lead in the fourth set and Adams State never looked back.
Miastkowska assisted on all six of the Mountain Lions blocks, while Kelsey Pobar had 18 digs and Crockett added 15.
