UCCS tabbed sixth in RMAC's preseason coaches' poll
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs volleyball team was picked by Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference coaches to finish sixth this season, the conference announced Monday.
The Mountain Lions, who went a program-best 16-3 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2007, were chosen to take third in the RMAC's East Division and sixth overall in the annual preseason coaches'poll.
Nebraska-Kearney was predicted overwhelmingly to win both the East Division and regular season titles. The Lopers, who are the four-time defending RMAC regular season champions, will be led by Preseason Player of the Year Nikki Scott, Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Kelli Wemhoff and Preseason Setter of the Year Cola Svec.
2007 RMAC co-champion Fort Lewis was picked to win the West Division along with Western New Mexico. Metro State was predicted to finish second in the RMAC East Division and second overall. Mesa State was tabbed to take third in the West Division and finish ahead of UCCS overall.
UCCS graduated six seniors from the team that went all the way to the RMAC championship game a year ago. Setter Jessica Stewart and outside hitter Lauren Orth are the only starters returning from that team.
The 2008 RMAC Volleyball Championships will be November 13-16 at the site of the regular season champion. The top eight schools qualify for the RMAC Tournament.
