Mountain Lions ranked second in region
To a season that has seen the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs achieve a number of historic firsts, add one more.
The Mountain Lions were ranked second in the first NCAA Division II Southwest Region poll, which was released Wednesday. It is the highest such ranking attained by a UCCS volleyball team.
The Mountain Lions rank behind only West Texas A&M, which has a 15-3 in-region record. Close behind UCCS are Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals Western New Mexico and Nebraska-Kearney.
UCCS has never been ranked higher than sixth in the regional poll.
Earlier this season, the Mountain Lions defeated a nationally-ranked opponent when they topped then-No. 23 Western Washington on Aug. 24. UCCS repeated the feat with a win over No. 24 Nebraska-Kearney on Sept. 14, which was also the program's first-ever win over the Lopers. The Mountain Lions have also won 10 of their past 11 matches, the best such streak in school history.
