Akers named RMAC East Division player of the week
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs middle blocker Brooke Akers was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division player of the week, the conference announced Monday.
The senior from Desert Hot Springs, Calif. average five kills per game, hit .452 and recorded seven blocks (two solo) as UCCS beat #25 Nebraska-Kearney Friday, the first time UCCS has ever beaten the Lopers in 17 attempts. In fact, prior to Friday's match, UCCS had only won four GAMES against Nebraska-Kearney. Akers came back Saturday to hit .583 and average 5.33 kills per game against Chadron State.
Akers is the first UCCS volleyball player to win a player of the week award since Kelley Angel did it in October of 2005.
The Mountain Lions are currently alone atop the RMAC's East Division Standings with a 4-0 conference record. They face 3-1 Metro State in Denver on Friday and 0-4 Colorado Christian on Saturday. UCCS' best-ever RMAC record to start a season was 5-0 in 2005.
