UCCS Opens RMAC Championships Monday
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs will compete in four events to open competition at the 2013 RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Monday at the Stermole Track and Field Complex at Colorado School of Mines. The first events to feature the Mountain Lions will be at 9:45 a.m.
Angie Martell and Sarah Treese will compete in the 10,000-meter run at 9:45 a.m., and will running against 16 other runners in the first women's track event of the day. It will be the first 10K run of the season for both Mountain Lions as only five RMAC runners have clocked a 10,000-meter run this season. One of those runners, Alyssa Andrews for UCCS, will be running the 5,000-meter run on Tuesday afternoon.
Alex Colvin will compete in the pole vault at 2 p.m., and enters the conference championships with the best seed mark of the season. Her toughest competition will likely be from Lacy Harris of Colorado State-Pueblo, who is less than three inches off of Colvin's season-best mark. Colvin was the conference runner-up last season in the outdoor championships and is a two-time indoor conference champion.
Ashley Benfield will be in the first of two flights in the shot put at 3 p.m. She will have a seed mark of 21 feet, 11 ½ inches from the Colorado Invitational on April 14 in Boulder, Colo.
Briana Alley, Kelli Palizza and Sara Kettelkamp will wrap up the day in the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash at 4:10 p.m., in the final track event of the day. Alley has the best mark this season for a Mountain Lion with 27.51 seconds from the Colorado Mines Pre-Conference Meet just more than a week ago. The winner of each of the four heats and the next five fastest times will earn a spot in Tuesday's final.
Fans can follow the action with live results from the timing contractor, TRXC Timing. Updates will also be available throughout the day at the UCCS Athletics Twitter account @GoMountainLions.
