Burell Lowers Own Mile Record, DMR Finishes No. 11
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Megan Burrell lowed her own program record in the mile run by nearly five seconds, but finished outside of the qualifying field for the finals to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in the 2013 NCAA Division Indoor Track & Field Championships today at the CrossPlex Complex.
Burrell finished the mile in 4 minutes and 55.70 seconds to run the first under-five minute mile in program history. She finished eighth in her heat and No. 13 overall, and four spots out of qualifying for the finals tomorrow afternoon.
The distance medley relay team finished in No. 11 in 12:09.67, after the Mountain Lions ran in No. 13 in the first three legs of the event. Melanie Diep opened with 3:42.15 in the 600-meter portion of the medley, and handed off to Jessica Todd who ran her 400-meter leg in 1:01.38. Alexa Urban ran the 800-meter run in 2:19.70 with the team in No. 13 before Veronica Sandoval moved the Mountain Lions up two positions with 5:06.46 in the mile for the final leg.
The events today close out the 2012-13 indoor track and field season for UCCS. The Mountain Lions will send athletes to the University of Colorado Boulder Jerry Quiller Classic next weekend to open the 2013 outdoor season.
