Mountain Lions Win Two Events in Mines Pre-Conference Meet

GOLDEN, Colo. - Madison Neher won by nearly 15 seconds in the 5,000-meter run while Sam Bauer won by three-tenths of a second against teammate Sarah Treese as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's track and field team competed at the Colorado Mines Pre-Conference Meet today at the Stermole Complex.

Neher won in 19 minutes and 26.37 seconds, which will adjust down to an 18:48.09 sea level time. It is less than two seconds off of her season-best time from the San Diego State Aztec Invitational a month ago. Teammate Alyssa Wendt finished in second with 19:41.14 for an adjusted timed of 19:02.38.

Bauer finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:12.32 and beat out teammate Treese, who finished in 12:12.62. Both Mountain Lions came close to their season-best performances in the event, with Treese a half-second off of her adjusted best mark and Bauer just more than a second away from her best time.

Hayley Gantt improved her times in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes to lead the UCCS sprinters today. She finished second in the 100 dash with 12.25 seconds and fourth in the 200 dash with 25.69 seconds. Gantt was also the leadoff sprinter on the 4x100-meter relay with Jessica Todd, Mykinthia Ebron and Briana Alley that finished third in 50.74 seconds.

Alley was third in the 400-meter dash and was the top Mountain Lion with 1:02.26. Ebron ran a season-best time in the 100-meter dash with 13.42 seconds in a fifth-place finish. Todd also ran a season-best time with 1:04.47 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish second.

Veronica Sandoval was the top attached collegiate runner and was the overall runner-up in the 1,500-meter run with 5:04.53, and her adjusted time of 4:56.36 was within a second of her time at sea level in San Diego. Makenzie Urban led a 2-3-4 finish for the Mountain Lions in the 800-meter run with 2:20.16 and was followed by Amber McAfee's 2:22.11 and Ashley Benfield's 2:22.92.

Up Next: UCCS will compete in the 2014 RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 5-6 at Adams State's Rex Stadium.
