UCCS Qualifies Three for National Track Championships
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs will send three female student-athletes to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 23-25 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl at Colorado State-Pueblo. Alyssa Andrews, Megan Burrell and Alex Colvin will represent the Mountain Lions.
Alex Colvin will compete in the pole vault in the afternoon on May 23 while Alyssa Andrews will compete in the finals of the 10,000-meter run that evening. Megan Burrell will run in the preliminaries of the 1,500-meter run on May 23 and compete for a spot in the finals, scheduled for early evening on May 25.
The three individual qualifiers are the most for UCCS at the outdoor national championships since the Mountain Lions sent four student-athletes to the 2005 national championships in Abilene, Texas. UCCS finished that meet with two All-Americans, the most in a single women's championship in program history.
Colvin qualified with 12 feet, 4 ¾ inches in the pole vault and is ranked No. 21 among the qualifiers. She cleared the height at the Sooner Athletic Conference Challenge on April 20. It will be the second trip for Colvin to the national championships and she will be one of two RMAC vaulters in the field when competition begins at 2 p.m., on Thursday.
Andrews is ranked No. 18 in the field for the 10,000-meter run with her time of 35:56.90 from the Mt. SAC Relays in April. It's the third-fastest time in UCCS history and the fastest since All-American Shannon Payne ran 35:45.50 in 2008. Andrews will be one of four RMAC runners in the 21-person field when the race begins at 8:10 p.m.
Burrell will compete in the preliminaries at 5:10 p.m., and is ranked No. 17 among the runners with 4:31.67. She qualified after lowering her program record at the Colorado Mines Last Chance Meet earlier this week and is one of five conference runners in the event. She will be running for a spot in the finals, scheduled for 5:35 p.m., on May 25.
An all-session pass for the national championships will be $25, and will be good for all three days of the championships in Pueblo, Colo. Live results and video will be available for all events at NCAA.com.
