UCCS Adds Two to Signing Class from Early Period

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Colorado Colorado Springs Head Women's Cross Country Coach and Co-Head Track and Field Coach David Harmer is excited to announce the addition of two student-athletes to the 2013 signing class. Makenzie Urban (Frederick, Colo.) and Chelsea Martus (Erie, Colo.) each signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.

Martus qualified for the Colorado 4A championships last fall for Erie High School. She competes in the sprints during the track and field season and has turned in personal bests of 26.13 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 58.86 in the 400-meter dash.

"Individually, Chelsea has great potential to improve both her 400 times and also develop into a very good 800-meter runner, having trained for cross country this past fall," Harmer said. "She will provide competition for spots on our 4x400-meter and distance medley relay teams. I can see her following in the footsteps of Alexa Urban, who came to UCCS as a spring and developed into an All-RMAC 800-meter runner."

Makenzie Urban, the younger sister of Alexa Urban, also qualified for the Colorado 4A cross country championships last fall at Frederick High School. She's turned in personal best times of 2:22 in the 800-meter run and 5:22 in the mile. She's a four-sport athlete for the Warriors in cross country / track and field, volleyball, basketball and soccer. Urban is planning to study biochemistry at UCCS.

"Makenzie is very raw in terms of her track and cross country experience," Harmer said. "As a starting player for Fredrick in volleyball, basketball and soccer, her training background and volume for track and cross country is small compared to her competitors around the state. I believe Makenzie has the potential to be a national class middle distance runner at UCCS."

The pair join Bailey Eppard (Johnston, Iowa) and Lina Arista (Colorado Springs, Colo.) who also signed during the early signing period. Emily Garneau has also committed to UCCS as a Division I transfer from Montana State.
