Colvin, Martell Win Events at Mines Twilight
GOLDEN, Colo. - Alex Colvin won the pole vault with 11 feet, 8 ½ inches and Angie Martell won the 5,000-meter run to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs at the Colorado Mines Twilight Collegiate Open this weekend at Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Colvin didn't start vaulting until five other student-athletes had been eliminated, and cleared her first height of 11-2 ½ on her first attempt. She cleared her second height of 11-8 ½ on two attempts before being stopped at 12-1 ½, which would have been an improvement of nearly two inches and would have put her into a tie for No. 12 in the national performance lists.
Martell won the 5,000-meter run last night in an unadjusted time of 18 minutes and 55.39 seconds, and led a 1-2-3 finish for the Mountain Lions in the event. Alyssa Andrews finished in second with 19:32.19, followed by Sam Bauer in 20:08.23.
Megan Burrell was the top collegiate runner in the mile run with 5:12.65 and ran the fastest mile for a Mountain Lion this season by more than nine seconds. The performance also put her into fifth in the all-time program records and it was the fastest time for UCCS since 2007.
Alexa Urban also finished as the top sprinter in the 400-meter dash and second overall with 1:00.31, which would unofficially rank ninth in the RMAC before altitude and track conversions. Jessica Todd finished fourth in the event with 1:02.34 and third in the top heat behind Urban.
Altitude and track size conversions were still pending with the Track and Field Result Reporting System, which will provide a clearer picture of national and conference standings for each event.
Up Next: The Mountain Lions will be back in action at the Steinhauer Fieldhouse next Saturday for the Joe Davis Open.
