Colvin Improves on Qualifying Mark at West Texas

CANYON, Texas - University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior pole vaulter Alex Colvin improved on her qualifying mark at the West Texas A&M Open on Saturday. She won the event with 12-3 ½ and defeated her nearest collegiate competitor by eight inches.

Colvin guaranteed a top five finisher after she cleared 10-11 ¼ on her first attempt of the day. She cleared the next height, 11-5 ¾, on her first attempt. She passed at 11-7 ¾ and cleared 11-11 ¾ on her second attempt to guarantee a top two finish. She cleared 12-3 ½ on her second attempt to defeat Kami Berryhill, and missed on her three attempts at 12-4 ¾.

Colvin improved on her personal best by three inches from the UTEP Springtime Meet earlier this season. She sits in a tie for No. 11 in the Division II performance lists with four weekends left to qualify for the national championships. She continues to lead the RMAC and is one of four national qualifiers from the conference.

The Mountain Lions will split squads next week between meets in California and in Colorado. UCCS student-athletes will compete in the 55th Mt. SAC Relays April 18-20, the Bryan Clay Invitational April 19-20 and the Beach Invitational April 19-20. The Mountain Lions will also send athletes to the Western State Invitational April 19-20 in Gunnison, Colo.
