Three Days, Four States, Two Meets, and another National Qualifier

By Jeff Bakke published February 13, 2012

Matt Cameron followed up his impressive performance in New Mexico last weekend with another national qualifying mark at the Grand Valley State Big Meet in Allendale, Michigan on Friday. Cameron, who currently sits fifth in the country in the 800 meter run, bettered the provisional standard in the mile by running 4:12.89 amongst stiff competition in Michigan. The performance moves Cameron to #2 all-time for UCCS behind only Moses Tum, a former national champion for the Mountain Lions.
Over 1000 miles away, another group of Mountain Lions travelled to Spearfish, SD for a meet on the campus of future Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference member Black Hills State University. UCCS was led by multi-event athletes Lauren Roberts, Jessica Todd, and Ailena McDonald. Roberts set a new personal best in the 60M hurdles, placing first in a time of 9.95 seconds. Fellow teammates Ailena McDonald and Todd also ran well, leading to a 1-3-5 finish for UCCS in the event. The high jump saw Roberts place fifth and Todd set a new personal best. The long jump was also a strong event, as Todd, Roberts, and McDonald finished 2-3-5. The athletes finished their day with strong runs in the 200 meters, with Todd and Roberts placing first and second, respectively. Also competing for the Mountain Lions were pole vaulters Christy Carmody and Jorja Flynn, who finished third and seventh at the meet. Carmody currently is tied for first place in the conference with fellow teammate Alex Colvin.
The UCCS men were led by sophomore Ryan Derrick, who ran 8:54.39 in the 3000 meter run to finish second. Sophomore pole vaulter Chris Myers had another strong outing on Saturday, as he cleared the 14' barrier for the first time in his career. Myers' mark of 4.30M (14'1.25") currently puts him at seventh on the RMAC performance list.
Next week, the Mountain Lions travel to the Colorado School of Mines for their last tune-up before the RMAC Indoor Championships in Chadron, NE on February 24-25.
