Benfield wins 400 hurdles as track season ends for all but one Mountain Lion

GOLDEN - Ashley Benfield won the 400-meter hurdles as the outdoor track & field season ended Sunday for all but one University of Colorado at Colorado Springs athlete at the Colorado Mines Last Chance Qualifier at Stermole Track & Field Complex.

Lauren Graham, who logged an automatic qualifying mark in the pole vault earlier this season, will be the only Mountain Lion representing UCCS at the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 26-28 in Turlock, Calif.

Sunday's last chance qualifier was just what the name implied - a last chance for athletes to qualify for nationals. Benfield's winning mark of 1 minute, 3.63 seconds was good but not fast enough to crack the field at nationals.

Marc Hensley capped a very good freshman year by setting a new personal best 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.35. Anthony Davis ran the same event, clocking in at 2:02.64.

Other freshmen completed their initial collegiate seasons. Alexa Urban took second in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 59.44 seconds, Jonathan Wright was fourth in the men's race at the same distance with a time of 49.61 seconds. Matt Winfrey was 11th in the 1,500-meter run at 4:11.45.

Graham led the field athletes with a first-place showing in the pole vault. Her winning mark of 3.71 meters, however, was not an improvement upon her season best. Joel Fraser, a sophomore like Graham, cleared 4.37 meters in the men's pole vault, placing third.

Erika Cushnie cleared 1.58 meters in the high jump, placing third.
