Track Team Returns from California Trip with School Records, Personal Bests
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs track team was California dreamin' this past weekend and woke up with another national qualifying mark, four school records and 21 personal bests.
Pole vaulter Lauren Graham again hit the national qualifying standard by clearing 3.90 meters at the Mount Sac Relays on Friday. While that height didn't eclipse the 3.98 meters she already posted at the New Mexico Tailwind Invitational on April 2, Graham did beat her closest rival - national indoor pole vault winner Lauren Stelton of Minnesota State - at both the Mount Sac Relays on Friday and the Beach Invitational on Saturday. In both meets, Graham was the top NCAA Division II participant.
The Mountain Lions also set new school records both the men's and women's 4 X 400 relay at the Beach Invitational on Saturday. The men's team of Jonathan Wright, Travis Whitman, Marc Hensley and Alan Ford covered the distance in 3 Minutes, 17.44 seconds. The women's quartet of Ashley Benfield, Dawn Eckert, Alexa Urban and Emily Weeks clocked in at 3:56.62.
Weeks also set a new school mark in the long jump, leaping 5.26 meters (17 feet, 3.25 inches) at the Brian Clay Invitational. Erika Cushnie established a new school record in the javelin throw with a toss of 31.42 meters (103 feet, 1 inch) at the Beach Invitational.
On Friday, five UCCS athletes competed at the prestigious Mount SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., while the balance of the team competed at the Brian Clay Invitational in nearby Azusa. On Saturday, the entire team competed at the Beach Invitational at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif.
Along with the school records, several Mountain Lions took advantage of the perfect weather and the oxygen-rick sea-level air to establish new personal bests. That list is as follows:
