Eight Mountain Lions Named to RMAC All-Academic Teams for Outdoor Track
COLORADO SPRINGS - Eight University of Colorado Colorado Springs athletes were named Wednesday to the 2011 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Teams. Lauren Graham was a first-team selection, Brien Hopkins and Jason Shaver were second-team selections and five others were named to the honor roll.
Mountain Lions on the honor roll were: Kaitlin Frier, Melissa Buchanan, Sara Kettelkamp, Alan Ford and Casey Weaver.
Aside from winning the RMAC championship in the pole vault and having a date with the national championships, Graham still found time to post a 3.64 grade-point average in Nursing. She will be competing for a national title in her event on Friday, may 27 at Turlock, Calif.
Hopkins narrowly missed a berth at nationals in the decathlon. His 6,178-point effort at the RMAC Outdoor Championships set a new school record and has him in good position to make a serious run at competing for a title in 2012, his senior year.
Shaver was not only the Mountain Lions' top sprinter, he was also a leader on the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The senior will be missed both on and off the track next season.
All of the honor roll selectees were sophomores this past season except Frier, who was a senior. She will leave UCCS with nine RMAC academic honors (three each for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track).
The teams were selected by Sports Information Directors at schools in the RMAC that sponsor women's outdoor track & field. To qualify for Academic All-RMAC, student-athletes must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 or better, be a starter or reserve, and completed two consecutive semesters or three quarters at their current institution prior to track and field season starting. Their cumulative GPA is what they had earned prior to the season beginning.
