Cardinale Sets National Qualifying Mark, Four UCCS Records Fall
BOULDER - Anthony Cardinale earned a provisional qualifying mark for nationals in the long jump Saturday as he and his University of Colorado at Colorado Springs teammates competed at the CU Invitational at Potts Field.
Cardinale leapt 7.22 meters (23 feet, 8.25 inches) to take second place overall, finishing .10 meter behind Lenyn Leonce of Division I Wyoming. UCCS teammate Robert McDougal also competed in the long jump, finishing sixth in the 21-man field.
Cardinale's jump was one of four UCCS school records set in the meet. Jonathan Wright ran the 400 in 49.38 seconds, Ashley Benfield covered the same distance in the women's race in 58.60 seconds and the women's 4 X 400-meter relay team of Benfield, Alexa Urban, Dawn Eckert and Emily Weeks clocked a time of 4 minutes, 01.46 seconds.
Wright took fourth in a 38-runner field. He was joined by teammates Alan Ford (ninth) and Travis Whitman (22nd). Benfield's effort was good for seventh place and first among Division II runners.
Urban ran individually in two events, taking 12th in the 200-meter dash and 11th in the 400.
Kaitlin Frier led an impressive UCCS contingent in the women's 3,000-meter run, finishing third with a time of 11:00.98. Veronica Sandoval and Melissa Buchanan took fifth and eighth respectively in the 25-runner field.
In field events, Weeks took seventh in the women's long jump and Chelsie Overocker was eighth in the triple jump.
The men's 4 X 400 relay comprised of Wright, Whitman, Marc Hensley and Ford was the fastest among Division II schools and fourth overall among 15 teams with a time of 3:20.90. The UCCS 'B' relay team of Jason Shaver, Matt Winfrey, Anthony Davis and Chris Ullom was also impressive, taking sixth.
Mike English was eighth in the 3,000-meter run, while teammate Derrick Ryan took 11th in a field of 42. Winfrey and Chris Reynolds finished 11th and 14th respectively in the 800.
