Gomez Takes Flight Amongst Many UCCS Season and Personal Bests

By Matt Rigby published April 17, 2010

Steven Gomez cleared 2.15 meter in the men's high jump at the Colorado State-Pueblo Invitational. The temperature was far from ideal, at about 50 degrees , still Gomez took advantage during the low wind period of Saturday afternoon. He nearly cleared 2.19 meters, but he will have a couple more cracks at that height as Gomez has automatically advanced to NCAA D-II Outdoor Track and Field National Championship in Charlotte N.C., May 27-29.

Ashley Benfield ran her UCCS best in the women's 400 meter with a time of 59.60 and won the event.

Jon Christian ran a personal best in the men's 400 meter by about 2 seconds with a time of 50.67, good for sixth place. Christian was accompanied in the 400 by Alan Ford, ran a 50.63 placing fifth and Jason Shaver, who ran a 51.73 time.

Sara Kettlekamp hit her season best in the women's 800 meter with a time of 2:26.45, winning her heat and good for fourth overall. Melissa Buchanan, who has had injury issues for most of her UCCS freshman year, was leading the same heat as Kettlekamp until about 80 meters to go but was not able to hold the lead, but still finished with a good 2:28.51 time.

Lauren Graham easily won the women's pole vault with a mark 3.85 meter. It was not the best day temperature wise for pole vaulting but the still the streak continues. Graham has cleared an NCAA provisional qualifying mark ever time she has competed in a UCCS uniform.

Coach Mark Misch knows there is still a lot of work to do over the next three week leading in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship. He says the competitiveness should translate well. It would be well worth it for the UCCS sports fan to make the trip to the Derose Thunderbowl in Pueblo for the RMAC Track and Field Championship, May 9-11. Both the men's and women's teams should be sharp and firing on all cylinders come the RMAC championship.

The rest of today's results can be found in the results section of the UCCS track pages

It was a good week of Mountain Lion track and field in both Lawrence, Kansas and Pueblo. Next up the UCCS Track will be in Jack Christian Invitational in Fort Collins on April 24, hosted by Colorado State University.
