National Championship Qualifier

Steven Gomez (sophomore), is the lone UCCS qualifier into the 2010 NCAA D-II Indoor Track and Field National Championship. Gomez comes into the National Championship as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference high jump indoor conference champion. Gomez is seeded as the #4 qualifier in the high jump with his mark of 2.14 meter which is about 7 feet and a quarter inch. The number 1 seed is Corey Thomas (freshman) out of Stonehill and the northeast region with his qualifying mark of 2.19 meter. The difference between Gomez and Thomas of 0.05 meter equates about two inches.

Gomez enters the National Championship as the #2 high jumper in the North-Central Region behind Maurice Hall, (junior), out of Concordia-St. Paul in Minnesota. Hall's qualifying mark is 2.15 meter. Gomez is joined out of the RMAC by Dyson Mortensen (freshman) out of Adams State, with a qualifying mark of 2.11 meter. The men's high jump field consists of five freshman, two sophomores, three juniors and two seniors. The NCAA Division-II high jump National Record is 2.29 meter, set by Jim Dilling, of Minnesota State-Mankato, in 2006.

Also, Gomez completed the 2010 indoor track and field regular season as the #1 collegiate high jumper in Colorado.
