Soaring at Air Force

By Matt Rigby published February 13, 2010

The men's relays stole the show for UCCS track and field in the Cadet Fieldhouse at the Air Force Academy. Both the men's distance medley and 4x400 relay won their respective heats. Those relays were apart of a very productive event.
"I was very pleased with how the team competed", said coach Mark Misch "it was a great meet and we had solid races."

On Friday the men won beating distance medley relay beating the 'A' distance medley both teams from Air Force and Wyoming. UCCS was somewhat disappointed with the winning time with it only being 10 minutes 35 seconds. The relay team of Alex Vazquez, Jason Shaver Jon Christian and Chris Reynolds were shooting for an NCAA qualifier.

"It is cool we get a little trophy or something" said Shaver, "though, we did not get the push we wanted from the field."

"They won the thing, which is good" said assistant coach David Harmer, "but we did not get the competition that we thought"

Then on Saturday, the same relay team of Vazquez, Shaver, Christian and Reynolds beat their school record 4x4 relay they set last week in Albuquerque. On this Saturday the 4x4 ran an altitude-adjusted 3:22.20, which sets a new school record.

Lauren Graham cleared 3.65 meter in the women's pole vault. Every track meet for Lauren in 2010 has vaulted 3.55 or better. Also, Graham had the opportunity to watch good example of pole vaulting. During the Air Force Invitational Kelsey Henry, competing unattached, broke the Canadian Women's National Indoor Track and Field record with a height of 4.45 meter.

"I am having fun." saidLauren Graham, "I am doing well and I like the progress I have made, despite a minor hamstring problem."

"Three point eight (meters) was almost there, it was in range for clearance." jumps coach Brandon Masters, "She got to her highest pole. She is following the plan and it is working."

Steven Gomez, cleared 2.00 meter in the men's high jump. He is looking forward to the conference indoor meet in Golden.

"It is good to be back where I was last year" Gomez, "however, I am nowhere near satisfied."

Anthony Cardinale got back into action, shaking off some injuries and rust for his first competitive jumps since December, jumping 12.52 meters. Cardinale is only in his second year of track and field. Last year he won the Colorado Class 5A State Championship in the triple jump.

"It was good to get past some injuries." said Cardinale "I am building for indoor conference and the outdoor season."

"Anthony is still very raw" said Brandon Masters, "and he is also extremely athletic."

Joel Keinitz ran a personal best in the mile with an altitude adjusted time of 4:25.

"That PR hurt today." said Keinitz, "I am on a plan and getting ready for the steeplechase during the outdoor season."
