Mountain Lions Open Outdoor Track Season at Potts Invitational in Boulder

By Shannon Payne published March 21, 2009

BOULDER - The sprints and field events crews opened up their outdoor track season at CU-Boulder's Pott's Invitational. With the indoor season officially ending one week ago, Saturday offered unseasonably fair weather and a good day for the sprinters, throwers, and jumpers establish their standards to work off of for the outdoor season.

Ailena McDonald hardly needed to shake off the rust as she pulled off an outstanding double in the long and triple jumps, placing second in the long jump and third in the triple. After her jumps, she went on to place 13th in the 100 meter dash.

In the men's high jump, it appeared as though three was the number of the day as three jumpers all tied for third place, with one being Brian Hopkins.

Freshman David Mueller continued on his streak of consistent performances as he placed sixth in the 100 meter dash and eighth in the 200. Also accompanying Mueller in the 100 was Jason Shaver, who took 14th, and jumper Rick Rimbert in 20th. Shaver competed with Mueller in the 200 as well, and finished 18th, followed by Josh Jones in 27th after also taking 21st in the 400. Jessica Luna took 19th in the women's field of the 200.

Kelsey Barry was UCCS' lone middle distance runner taking to the track in the 1500. Barry, normally a 400 and 800 meter runner, moved up a notch in distance to place sixth.

Jenn Callan also had a busy day as she competed in the hammer, shot put, and discus throws. Callan took 16th in the hammer and 12th in both the shot put and discus. On the men's side of the throws, Preston Williams and Trevor Nau finished 19th and 20th in the hammer throw. The two were joined by Hopkins and Rimbert in the javelin where Nau took fifth, Hopkins placed seventh while Rimbert and Williams took ninth and 10th.
