Former UCCS star takes 10th place at the Bolder Boulder

Former University of Colorado at Colorado Springs athlete Sarah Shepard took 10th place among amateurs at Sunday's Bolder Boulder.

Shepard, who was an All-American in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country while competing for the Mountain Lions from 2003-07, covered the course in 36 minutes, 35 seconds. Her time was good enough that she would have finished ahead of Team USA's Zoila Gomez for 21st in the professional's race.

Other former UCCS runners competing included Jay Luna (19th in the men's race) and Ashley Birger (71st in the women's race). Gabe Small, who competed for UCCS this past season, took 46th in the men's race.

The 2008 Bolder Boulder set a new event record with an estimated 54,250 entrants.

Shepard has been training under the tutelage of UCCS cross country/track coach Mark Misch since January. At that time, she was coming off a stress fracture so the training regimen was focused quality, staying healthy and long-term progression.

Four months into her comeback, Shepard took second place at the Cherry Creek Sneak, a highly competitive five-mile race held on April 27. That proved to be a good stepping stone to the Bolder Boulder, which draws the most competitive field of any Colorado race.

Misch estimates that Shepard is 95 percent back physically.
